• The average weight of the kidneys of a healthy adult is 142 grams that are about the size of the fist; they look like beans, so named bean-shaped organ.
• Of chance, if a baby is born with one single kidney, that one single kidney would weigh the size of the two kidneys and function regularly.
• In one single kidney, there are as many as 1.5 million nephrons or blood-filtering units that help remove a waste product called urea from the blood. If tied together, these nephrons can go as long as 8 km.
• The kidneys are lopsided. Kidneys are located in the lower back, below a part of the rib cage. The kidneys are asymmetrical, which means the right and left kidney differ in size. The right kidney tends to be smaller and situated a little lower to make space for the liver. The left kidney is comparatively above the right one.
• The kidneys at time filter only 99% of the blood and return it to the blood while the 1 % is left to be produced as the urine. Through this urine, the body eliminates the excess of fluid and waste not needed.
